Rome Fiumicino tops 50 million passengers for first time, plans terminal expansion
Aeroporti di Roma (AdR) announced today that Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport has surpassed 50 million annual passengers, breaking its previous 2019 record of 43.5 million and cementing its status as the EU’s fourth-busiest hub. The milestone comes just as the Christmas rush begins; AdR expects another two million travellers between 22 December and 7 January.

Chief Executive Marco Troncone confirmed that a €2 billion development plan will now proceed to public-consultation phase. Key elements include an additional boarding pier for intercontinental flights, a dedicated Schengen business-aviation lounge and upgraded biometric e-gates to interface with the EU Entry/Exit System. Construction is scheduled to start in Q3 2026 and finish ahead of Jubilee 2027 traffic peaks.

For mobility managers the expansion signals improved connectivity but also years of airside works. AdR promises to phase building so that night closures are limited to secondary taxiways, yet some stand shortages are inevitable during peak seasons. Airlines seeking new slots for summer 2026 should apply early as IATA slot-coordination meetings open in January.

The capacity jump is expected to attract more long-haul routes; ITA Airways and a Saudi carrier are already in talks over direct Riyadh and Jeddah services, according to Transport Minister Matteo Salvini. More destinations mean greater flexibility for expatriate assignments, but also a need for updated travel policies as new arrival terminals come online.
