Low-cost carrier Air India Express (AIX) will induct its first line-fit Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft (registration VT-RNT) on Monday, marking the airline’s first brand-new jet since the Tata Group acquired Air India in 2022. Unlike the leased ex-SpiceJet MAXs currently in service, the new airframe arrives with a two-class cabin, 189 economy and 12 premium seats, and satellite-based Wi-Fi that can be activated once Indian regulations allow.
AIX plans to deploy the aircraft on high-density Gulf routes such as Kochi–Dubai and Kozhikode–Muscat, progressively replacing older 737-800s that average 15 years of age. The carrier expects 18 additional MAX deliveries in 2026 under a 190-jet order placed by parent Air India for its low-cost subsidiaries.

For business travellers, the MAX offers a 14 % fuel-burn reduction and extended range, enabling direct flights from tier-2 Indian cities to destinations like Dammam and Kuala Lumpur without payload penalties. Travel-management companies say the move will intensify price competition on India–Gulf corporate traffic, where AIX already commands a 22 % share.
The delivery also signals India’s recovery in international seat capacity, which has now reached 108 % of pre-Covid winter 2019 levels, according to DGCA data released this week.
