United Airlines Issues Flexible Rebooking Waiver Ahead of Chicago Storms
United Airlines on 25 March introduced a travel-waiver programme for flights into and out of Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and Midway (MDW) from 25 to 31 March, in anticipation of a strong thunderstorm system forecast to hit the Upper Midwest. Details posted to the carrier’s official subreddit allow passengers booked on United or United Express to change to alternate flights departing by 31 March without fare-difference charges, provided the origin and destination remain the same. Spring storms routinely snarl operations at O’Hare—United’s largest hub—but this waiver is notable because it activates a full day before the National Weather Service’s first severe-weather watch, giving corporate travel planners extra time to reroute. United moved roughly 36 percent of its global capacity through ORD in Q1 2026, and the airport is a critical connection point for Asia-Pacific corporate traffic returning to the U.S. heartland. Mobility managers should re-evaluate itineraries with tight same-day connections in Chicago and consider re-booking through Denver, Washington Dulles or Houston IAH while waiver flexibility remains. Travellers already en route can use the United app to self-rebook; upgrades and seat selections transfer automatically under the policy but ancillary purchases such as Wi-Fi passes do not. While the waiver currently covers only ORD/MDW, meteorologists warn that squall lines could drift into Detroit and Cleveland by 27 March, potentially prompting additional carrier advisories. Companies should keep an eye on alert feeds from Delta and American, which historically mirror United’s waivers within 4–6 hours.
