India took a major step forward in its aviation-led mobility strategy on 28 March 2026 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut the ribbon on Phase 1 of Noida International Airport (IATA: DXN) at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh. Designed to handle 12 million passengers a year in its first phase—and up to 60-120 million passengers by 2050—the greenfield hub will relieve chronic capacity constraints at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and create a second international gateway for the National Capital Region. The airport is being developed by Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd (a special-purpose unit of Zurich Airport AG) under a 40-year concession. Zurich Airport has invested ₹5,700 crore (US $690 million) so far and confirmed that more than 17,000 direct and indirect jobs will be created during the construction phase alone. Domestic carriers IndiGo, Air India Express and Akasa Air have announced launch flights from December 2026, while Lufthansa Cargo has signed a preliminary MoU for a dedicated freighter operation once the second runway opens in 2028. Beyond passenger flows, the project is expected to catalyse a 5,000-acre multimodal logistics zone, an aerospace park and a dedicated MRO cluster. Real-estate values along the Yamuna Expressway corridor have already risen 18 percent year-on-year, according to Knight Frank India, and the Uttar Pradesh state government projects that Jewar could attract ₹35,000 crore in ancillary investment within the next decade. For international assignees and global businesses, DXN will cut ground travel times to the tech hubs of Noida and Greater Noida by up to 90 minutes compared with Delhi airport. A 72 km express metro link to Noida Sector-142 has been fast-tracked, and officials confirmed that an e-Visa facilitation centre and dedicated Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) desk will be operational from day one. The inauguration underscores New Delhi’s goal of growing India’s airport network from the current 149 to 220 by 2030, and gives multinational employers an additional option for routing assignees, cargo and executive traffic directly into India’s most important economic cluster outside Mumbai.
