Cypriot logistics specialist Airtrans Aviation has been appointed Cargo General Sales Agent (GSA) for Royal Jordanian Airlines, expanding Larnaca Airport’s reach to Amman and onward to North America and Asia. Announced on 6 April, the deal strengthens Cyprus’ role as an Eastern Mediterranean cargo gateway and offers exporters new capacity at a time when sea-freight routes via the Red Sea remain volatile. Airtrans operates the island’s largest cargo handling facility and already represents multiple carriers. By adding Royal Jordanian’s network of 50 plus destinations, the firm can now offer Cypriot shippers faster transit times for high-value goods such as pharmaceuticals and electronics—sectors that underpin many expatriate assignments. For multinationals, the agreement provides a resilient alternative to overland trucking through Turkey or costly trans-shipments via Athens. Talent mobility teams relocating staff and household goods can tap into additional lift for unaccompanied airfreight, minimising door-to-door delays. The timing is significant: regional air-cargo demand has spiked as companies reroute around conflict-affected maritime corridors. Forwarders expect Royal Jordanian’s belly-hold capacity on daily Airbus A321 flights to absorb part of that surge, potentially stabilising freight rates out of Cyprus. Industry observers also note the diplomatic dimension. Stronger commercial ties with Jordan align with Nicosia’s strategy of deepening partnerships with moderate Middle-Eastern states, thereby bolstering its candidacy for eventual Schengen accession and future US Visa Waiver negotiations.
