The sit-in comes at an awkward time for the Meloni administration, which has tried to balance support for Israel with growing domestic criticism of the Gaza blockade. Family members of the detainees say consular staff have been granted only limited access so far. From a global-mobility perspective, the case highlights the risks faced by Italians involved in politically sensitive missions abroad. Employers with staff participating in humanitarian work are reminded to register travellers with the Farnesina’s DOVE SIAMO NEL MONDO portal and to verify insurance coverage for detentions. Diplomatic lawyers note that Italy could invoke the EU consular-protection directive if Israel denies timely access, potentially escalating the dispute to a Brussels level. The Foreign Ministry has not ruled out dispatching a special envoy if no resolution is reached within 72 hours.
