Cantonal authorities therefore petitioned the federal government for expanded powers, arguing that the dense concentration of international organisations and diplomatic missions magnifies the risk profile. Under Schengen rules, member states may re-impose border checks only as a last resort in the face of a “serious threat to public order.” Switzerland has invoked the clause before, most recently during Euro 2024. Up to 5,000 Swiss troops will be on standby in a subsidiarity role, mirroring the security template used for the 2024 UEFA Women’s Championship. For cross-border commuters and corporate shuttle services the impact will be tangible: travellers should factor in extra time and carry proof of purpose (work badges, meeting invitations). Logistics firms moving just-in-time goods through Vallorbe or Bardonnex should anticipate spot inspections and potential lane closures. Employers may wish to issue travel waivers or stagger shifts to cushion delays. The decision also tests Switzerland’s new Schengen Border Code provisions, adopted the same day, which require detailed reporting to the European Commission on the necessity and proportionality of any re-introduced controls. Mobility professionals should watch for post-event evaluations that could influence how quickly future large-scale events trigger similar measures.
