Data released by Shenzhen’s Port Office show that 4.3015 million passengers crossed the land border between Shenzhen and Hong Kong during the 1–5 May holiday, with daily peaks exceeding 1 million on 2 May. The rush underscores the rapid integration of transport networks and customs systems in the Greater Bay Area. Rail was the star performer: Guang-Shen-Gang high-speed services added 13 extra train pairs daily, cutting West Kowloon–Futian journey times to 14 minutes. West Kowloon checkpoint alone processed 13.78 million passengers on 3 May—a station record. On the road side, 24-hour Huanggang checkpoint handled 42,000 vehicles, including a sharp increase in cross-border private cars and school-bus shuttles. Officials attribute the smooth flow to expanded e-gates that reduce average clearance to 10 seconds and real-time lane management that opens extra manual counters during spikes. From 1 May, Shenzhen Bay also debuted a biometric fast lane for registered drivers, allowing paperless passage by facial and iris scan. For employers operating on both sides of the boundary, the figures confirm that true same-day commuting is now practical. HR teams relocating talent to Shenzhen or Hong Kong can offer dual-city living packages, while event organisers can schedule functions without the buffer days once required for unpredictable queues. Looking ahead, planners expect sustained demand as Hong Kong removes property curbs and Shenzhen rolls out tax incentives for overseas specialists. Mobility managers should, however, advise travellers to enrol in e-Channel programmes early and avoid weekend evening peaks when family and concert traffic remains heavy.
