Fatal restraint on Larnaca–Manchester flight prompts UK police investigation
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that Callum Kerr, 35, died after passengers and crew restrained him on a Jet2 flight from Larnaca to Manchester in the early hours of 22 June. Officers boarded the aircraft on arrival to find Kerr unresponsive; he died in hospital the following day. The Independent Office for Police Conduct is reviewing body-cam footage but is treating officers as witnesses. Airlines have stepped-up cabin-crew training on disruptive passengers since post-pandemic traffic rebounded, yet incidents on east-Mediterranean holiday routes remain above 2019 levels. The case will reignite debate over whether carriers should expand the use of restraining devices and pre-clear passengers with known behavioural risks. Travel-risk managers should remind staff of carrier-specific onboard conduct policies; a violent incident can divert flights, impose unexpected accommodation costs and create immigration complications when a passenger is denied onward travel.
