CBP tells Congress drug seizures along U.S.–Canada border down 55 %
Testifying before the House Committee on Border Security yesterday, Acting Deputy Chief Jason Schneider of U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported a 55 percent year-on-year drop in narcotics seizures at the northern border. Apprehensions of undocumented migrants are also down 22 percent this fiscal year. The data contradicts claims by some lawmakers that Mexican cartels are rerouting fentanyl through Canada. Schneider noted most fentanyl found near the Great Lakes had in fact crossed at the southern border before moving north internally. From a mobility perspective the statistics bolster arguments against imposing southern-style inspection regimes—such as mandatory I-94 issuance or vehicle X-ray scans—at gateways like Detroit–Windsor or Champlain–Lacolle. Business chambers on both sides of the 49th parallel fear that political pressure could still trigger new screening measures, increasing wait times for cross-border commuters and just-in-time supply chains. The testimony comes as Ottawa continues to invest in joint-facility pre-clearance pilots, while Washington weighs reallocating personnel from the north to the Rio Grande. Companies moving goods or staff via Canada-U.S. corridors should monitor whether the hearing translates into policy shifts or merely quiets calls for tougher northern checkpoints.
