Dubai Customs issues summer guide on what passengers can (and cannot) bring into UAE
With three million passengers forecast to pass through Dubai’s airports in the first two weeks of July, Dubai Customs has re-released its passenger guidance booklet detailing duty-free allowances and prohibited items. Travellers may import gifts worth up to Dh 3,000, 400 cigarettes, four litres of alcohol or two cartons of beer without paying duty, provided quantities are strictly for personal use. The document clarifies that cash or negotiable instruments above Dh 60,000 must be declared and that medicines are limited to a three-month personal supply accompanied by a stamped prescription. Pets require an advance import permit, and any psychotropic drugs without Ministry of Health approval are strictly banned. Customs officers warn that over-quota items may be detained for up to 30 days pending payment of duty; unclaimed goods are auctioned. The reminder comes as airports ramp up e-gate and AI baggage-scanner capacity that can clear a bag in seven seconds, part of efforts to handle record summer volumes while maintaining security. The advisory is particularly relevant for expatriates returning from leave with high-value electronics or regional delicacies, as well as business travellers carrying marketing samples. Mobility managers should circulate the updated thresholds to avoid shipment delays and last-minute fines that cannot be expensed.
