‘Across the Pacific’ youth exchange brings U.S. students back to China’s Yunnan Province
Sixteen university students from China and the United States kicked off a ten-day cultural-immersion tour in Kunming on July 16 under the “Across the Pacific: China-U.S. Youth Dialogue for a Shared Future” programme. Organised by the China International Communications Group and the U.S.-based International Student Conference, the visit is one of the first sizeable inbound student groups since Beijing’s February expansion of its 30-day visa-waiver scheme. The itinerary includes homestays in ethnic Dai and Bai villages, workshops on cross-border e-commerce in nearby free-trade zones and meetings with local start-ups that hire foreign graduates under Yunnan’s provincial talent visa. U.S. participants entered visa-free and received on-arrival mobile-SIM registration through the National Immigration Administration’s new app—features the organisers highlighted as evidence of China’s drive to make short-term study and business visits easier. For Chinese universities hoping to rebuild joint-degree pipelines with U.S. partners, the tour is a litmus test of post-pandemic logistics: flights remained fully booked, but Kunming airport’s 24-hour transit visa counter processed the group in under 15 minutes, according to faculty chaperones. Local officials said more than 40 similar programmes are pencilled in for the autumn semester, many tied to China’s growing list of visa-exempt countries. Travel suppliers in Yunnan expect a 25 % rise in inbound educational groups, bringing welcome revenue to hotels that traditionally rely on domestic tourism. Employers should note that students who complete accredited short courses can obtain a two-year work-and-residence permit under Yunnan’s regional talent scheme—creating a pipeline of bilingual graduates for multinationals expanding into Southwest China and neighbouring ASEAN markets.
