A deeper dive into the June tourism bulletin released on Friday paints a nuanced picture of Cyprus’ travel landscape. Total arrivals for the month slipped to 489,965—down 8,562 visitors from 2025—yet the composition of travellers is shifting in ways that carry strategic significance for the island’s global-mobility profile. While holidaymakers still dominate (81.6 per cent of the total), the proportion coming for business climbed to 7 per cent—its highest June reading in a decade. Conference organisers credit a flurry of tech, finance and shipping events in Limassol, as well as the launch of Larnaca’s renovated convention centre, which now offers hybrid in-person/virtual facilities. The government’s digital-nomad visa, introduced in 2025 and capped at 5,000 permits, is also beginning to generate repeat short-term entries by remote workers who combine meetings with leisure. Outbound mobility is equally robust. Some 168,953 Cyprus residents returned from overseas trips in June, up 7.4 per cent year-on-year—a sign that pent-up demand for both leisure and corporate travel remains strong despite higher airfare prices. Greece and the UK accounted for over 43 per cent of these returns, underscoring the importance of maintaining frequent, competitively priced connections on those trunk routes. Airport operator Hermes confirmed that passenger throughput at Larnaca and Paphos fell just 4 per cent in June compared with double-digit declines in March, reinforcing evidence that the market is stabilising. Airlines have already reinstated 22 weekly frequencies for the late-summer timetable, including the return of Emirates’ Dubai service and additional Wizz Air capacity to London and Warsaw. Industry analysts caution, however, that sustained growth will depend on resolving outstanding air-space risk premiums linked to the Middle-East conflict and on the timely introduction of automated passport e-gates to manage peak-season volumes without undermining the passenger experience. Both issues will be on the agenda when the Deputy Ministry of Tourism hosts its annual stakeholder summit in September.
