The RE9 regional trains linking Neuchâtel with Frasne—where passengers can connect with TGV Lyria services to Paris—had been operating on a reduced schedule since 00:00 on Saturday while engineering teams from both SBB and SNCF Réseau replaced sleepers, renewed ballast and calibrated signalling equipment around Les Verrières and La Rivière-Drugeon. During the works, Swiss commuters and leisure travellers heading to France faced cancellations and bus substitutions, adding up to 45 minutes to journey times. Freight operators, including Nestlé Waters and Valtronic, rerouted high-value cargo through Basel and Delle to avoid the bottleneck, illustrating how even short-term engineering windows can ripple through supply chains in western Switzerland. The line serves as the only electrified rail gateway between the Swiss Plateau and France’s high-speed network outside Geneva. Regional authorities had pressed for the upgrade to be scheduled over a July weekend to minimise the impact on cross-border workers—an estimated 8 200 people commute daily via the Jura Arc—and on summer tourists bound for the Jura lakes and Burgundy vineyards.
