Route-data specialist AeroRoutes revealed on 20 July that Air China has filed schedules to deploy China’s home-grown COMAC C919 jet on the daily CA 959/960 rotation between Beijing Capital (PEK) and Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia (UBN) from 12 August to 28 September. The 1h 50m sector will become the C919’s first regular international service, following its domestic debut in May 2025 and regional charter runs to Hong Kong. Initial seat maps show a two-class layout with eight business and 156 economy seats, identical to the configuration used on the Beijing–Shanghai trunk. Air China will continue to operate the other two daily PEK–UBN flights with Airbus A321neos, giving corporate travellers a mix of capacity and aircraft choice. Industry insiders say the short-haul Mongolia route was selected because of low terrain, stable weather, and existing bilateral approvals, enabling a manageable proving phase before the C919 attempts longer missions to Seoul, Osaka or Singapore. For mobility managers the significance is twofold. First, Chinese carriers are on track to induct another 25 C919s by year-end, potentially easing domestic seat shortages that have pushed up fares for assignees. Second, international regulators—including the European Union Aviation Safety Agency—will be watching the type’s cross-border performance closely; a smooth run could hasten reciprocal approvals and expand routing options for travel programmes. Enterprises sending staff to Mongolia—often energy, mining and infrastructure firms—should note that arrival procedures at UBN now include biometric collection for first-time visitors and that China’s visa-free policy does not extend to Mongolian nationals. Travellers on the C919 will experience the same cabin pressure altitude as a Boeing 787, which COMAC claims reduces fatigue on early-morning flights often used by project teams. Strategically, Beijing’s push to showcase a domestically built airliner on an international stage dovetails with its ambition to reduce dependence on Airbus and Boeing. If the trial succeeds, more intra-Asia sectors are likely to switch to the C919 in 2027, giving travel buyers fresh leverage in fare negotiations but also a new variable in safety-approval checklists.
