China Eastern Launches Direct Shanghai–Dublin Service, Adding 45,000 Seats a Year

China Eastern Airlines inaugurated its long-anticipated thrice-weekly service between Shanghai Pudong (PVG) and Dublin (DUB) on 20 July, delivering Ireland’s first non-stop passenger link to Mainland China. Tourism Ireland, which co-funded a joint marketing campaign with the carrier, estimates the route will inject 45,000 additional seats annually and generate €45–50 million in visitor expenditure. The new MU761/762 rotation departs Shanghai every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, operated by a 287-seat Airbus A350-900 configured with business, premium economy and economy cabins. Flight time is about 12 hours, trimming at least four hours off itineraries that previously required a European hub connection. The schedule is timed for onward connectivity at Pudong to 25 Chinese domestic cities—including Xi’an, Chengdu and Shenzhen—supporting two-way tourism and enabling Irish exporters to reach Tier-2 manufacturing clusters on a same-day basis. For Chinese travellers the draw is Ireland’s technology corridor and scenic “Wild Atlantic Way”; for corporates, the direct flight dovetails with Dublin’s growing role as a European headquarters location. Tech firms with China-based engineering teams can now roster shorter rotation cycles, and global mobility departments will save an estimated €1,200 per employee trip in avoided layover costs according to industry TMC FCM Travel. Cargo capacity (15 tonnes each way) also opens new lanes for pharma and e-commerce parcels, strengthening east-west supply chains at a time when Red Sea diversions are squeezing belly-hold availability. Visa processes remain unchanged—Chinese leisure visitors still require a short-stay C visa, obtainable within five working days in Shanghai—yet Tourism Ireland believes the direct service will support its ambition to restore 2019’s record 90,000 arrivals from China by 2027. Companies planning secondments should note that the Department of Enterprise is piloting a “Fast-Track STEM Employment Permit” for Chinese nationals employed by IDA-supported firms, aligning nicely with the new air link.
